Reagent Control Systems

WATER SPECIALISTS ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGIES REAGENT CONTROL SYSTEMS are designed to monitor wastewaters for controlling the addition of reagents to achieve predetermined process set points.  These systems eliminate operator guesswork when adding chemicals to waste streams, and thereby prevent the under-or-over dosing of reagents even under fluctuating conditions.  Specific application electrodes, immersed in the solutions, continuously signal their respective controllers that monitor these signals and control the addition of reagents on a real time basis.  The uniform, reliable process monitoring and control ensures consistent results and a significant reduction in chemical usage and costs.

Applications

WATER SPECIALISTS ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGIES Reagent Control Systems can readily be incorporated into new or existing continuous flow and batch wastewater treatment systems for the following applications:

  • pH Monitoring and Control for adding acid or caustic to achieve a preset pH value.
  • ORP Monitoring and Control for adding reagents to achieve specific chemical reduction or oxidation reactions to preset millivolt values.
  • Precipitation Monitoring and Control for adding precipitating reagents to achieve complete precipitation reaction of the ionic metals to a preset millivolt value. This control is more accurate for this application than using ORP control because it is less affected by pH fluctuations and the presence of reducing agents.
  • Batch Treatment: Two models of the reagent control systems, pH/ION and pH/ORP, are prepackaged to perform two functions, i.e., they monitor and control both ORP reagents (pH/ORP). These systems are configured to operate in a sequential mode. Under this arrangement, the pH value controls the system operation. The second function, controlled by the ION or ORP controller, is in sequence to the pH function. Only when the pH preset value is achieved and maintained, is the secondary function activated. Whenever the pH value drifts from the preset point, the secondary function is halted and the pH adjustment made before the secondary function resumes. Application examples include:
    • Heavy Metal Precipitation
    • Single Stage Cyanide Destruction
    • Hex-Chrome Reduction

Chemical Savings

Utilizing an automated REAGENT CONTROL SYSTEM typically reduces chemical usage from 20% to 50% while at the same time providing real-time discharge compliance.

Packaged Systems

Packaged systems are available for all applications which call for measurements of, and responses to, the oxidation/reduction potential (ORP), ionic activity and/or pH values in solutions. The components, selected for each specific application, are housed in an environmental enclosure which provides protection to NEMA 12 standards.

System Components

The components utilized in a system are selected according to the specified application. The typical component selection for each system is shown above. The descriptions that follow are for the major components incorporated into the systems.

Controller

The controller monitors the electrode signal and activates the output relays as called for by the off/on high and low set point control. The controller is housed in the enclosure described below. All controls and displays are located on the front panel for convenient monitoring and adjustment. Features include a large digital LED readout and LED status indicator lights for alarm conditions. Separate high and low set points, with adjustable hysteresis, control the relays which activate dosing pumps, reagent metering devices, valves, lights, alarms, etc. Other features include 4-20 mA output for remote monitoring and hard copy recording.

 pH Electrode

The combination pH measuring and reference electrode is housed in a single one-piece epoxy body, gel-filled, with sealed DOUBLE JUNCTION design to eliminate unwanted chemical interference and clogging. it has a 1/2 inch body diameter and is supplied with a 3 foot coaxial cable with BNC connector.

ION SPECIFIC ELECTRODE

This ultra sensitive electrode is engineered for direct measurement of specific, ion activity in waste waters for treatment with organic and inorganic precipitants. Fast, drift-free response ensures accurate dosing. This electrode features a durable epoxy body (1/2 inch diameter) with an extra thick sensing element for long life. It is supplied with a 3 foot coaxial cable with BNC connector.

ORP ELECTRODE

This is a combination measuring and reference electrode housed in a single epoxy body cartridge. It is a double junction type with a platinum sensor for fast accurate response to the oxidizing or reducing potential of solutions. It has a 1/2 inch body diameter and a 3 foot cable with BNC connector.

ENCLOSURE

The environmental enclosure, supplied with mounting brackets, provides protection to NEMA 1 standards. It houses the applicable controller(s), on/off switch, fuse, relays, power cord, and a "pigtail-type" electrical receptacle that receives the signal from the relay terminal block for activating a pump, valve, lights, alarms, etc., - up to 8 amps.

ADAPTERS/CABLES/ELECTRODE HOLDERS

Reference Adapter Tee - Supplied with the system when an ion controller reference junction is required.

BNC Extension Cable - An extension cable is required when electrodes are located more than 3 feet from controllers. A 40ft length is supplied for each controller.

Submersible Electrode Holder - Supplied for each electrode, this variable length holder allows electrode to be submerged in liquid.

CHEMICAL METERING PUMPS

Metering pumps are application specific and because many users already have metering pumps, none are included with the packaged systems shown on page 3. Each system includes a receptacle for connecting a reagent pump to the control system. Ask the factory for recommendations on metering pumps for your application.
